I just wanted to take this opportunity to share some facts about lactose intolerance. Because if you have it and you’re looking for ways to deal, you need to know that vegans will absolutely lie to you and they’re one of the few groups I see talking about it

- Lactose intolerance is not a dairy allergy. You can, should, and hopefully will continue consuming dairy with lactose. You actually NEED lactose to fight lactose intolerance. If you cut it out of your diet completely then your sensitivity will increase. This is the big one that vegans will lie to you about. One actually tried to convince me that lactose was killing my body. No, it’s not a dairy allergy.

- This one is probably fairly obvious but you don’t need to stop drinking cow’s milk to avoid lactose in your milk. Lactose free milk is a thing and there’s lactaid pills you can take. 

- Lactose intolerance isn’t “because you’re not a baby cow” like vegans like to say. It’s because your body doesn’t produce enough lactase and can’t digest lactose. It’s extremely common in people of colour with upwards of 90% of Asian people having it. It’s less common in northern Europeans which might go a ways towards explaining why white vegans as a whole know very little about it and seem to mistake it for a dairy allergy.

- Lactose is found in non dairy foods like some breads, processed meats, cereals, chips, medications, etc. And certain dairy products have higher or lower concentrations. Butter has a stupid low amount for example. And everyone’s tolerance is different.

- The average LT person can have 12 grams of lactose per sitting. You’ll likely be able to have more if it’s consumed with a large meal. 

- Eat yoghurt!!! Yes, DAIRY yoghurt! The bacteria in it produce lactase. It will help. 

I constantly get shit on (you know, because lactose intolerance, right *ba dum tiss*) in the notes of this by people who are, I can only assume, willfully misinterpreting what I’m saying. You all have common sense. Use it.

- Obviously I’m not saying you should consume any kind of dairy, with or without lactose, if you have a dairy allergy. This is just a post about lactose intolerance. Why are you telling me that I’m someone trying to kill you by recommending what I have for managing LI because you have a dairy allergy? That would be like if someone with severe asthma accused scientists of trying to kill them by recommending the general public get plenty of exercise. I have a penicillin allergy. Do you think the entire US military is trying to murder me personally because they require penicillin injections? Or, like the US military, are you capable of accepting that some people are exempt to such rules due to other conditions? The military does not give you the penicillin shot if you are allergic. Why do you think I’d expect you to consume dairy products if you have a dairy allergy?

- I’m not requiring anyone to consume lactose. If it’s genuinely easier for you to cut it out entirely, then obviously go ahead. You don’t need my approval and I’d not presume you did anyway. This isn’t an attempt to get anyone to switch to an American/European/white culture’s diet. This is saying that if you choose to cut lactose out entirely, the average person living in a predominantly white culture is going to find it difficult to eliminate their lactose related health problems because lactose is found in all sorts of things you wouldn’t expect it to be in and dairy is a significantly larger part of the local cuisine. Thus, many people may find it easier to continue consuming lactose in smaller or better managed amounts so that when they accidentally come across lactose (such as in breads) then they won’t find that their sensitivity skyrocketed in lactose’s absence and get themselves much sicker than they would have expected.
